We have been covering different Ubuntu Themes; Nearly all of them were GTK themes that were inspired by material and flat design. It’s been a long time since we did an article based on themes, and we thought to give you an ultimate list.
Our list includes some themes featured on FossMint, along with others that you probably don’t know. If you are very particular about how your interface looks, this list will blow you away completely.
The installation instructions are pretty much the same for all themes which come in any kind of compressed format.
- Download the theme you want.
- Extract the compressed file to the themes folder in the home.
- Use GNOME or Unity to select the theme.
ArcMPD is an Arc-based translucent GTK theme that is very minimal, as the name implies.
Flat Remix Gnome Theme
Right now, Flat Remix Gnome is my favorite on this list. Inspired by Google’s material design, this is a simple yet modern theme. It comes with “flat” colors that look modern with high contrast and saturation levels with sharp outlines. On top of all this, it comes with its icon pack. Flat Remix theme is available in both dark and light versions.
Install Flat Remix Gnome theme using following PPA in Ubuntu and Linux Mint.
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:daniruiz/flat-remix $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install flat-remix-gnome
On Fedora based distributions.
$ sudo dnf copr enable daniruiz/flat-remix $ sudo dnf install flat-remix-gnome
Being A modern flat GTK theme, Ant theme is going to be a feast for your eyes. It has three color variants – Ant, Ant Dracula, and Ant Bloody.
Canta theme is also inspired by material design. Some noteworthy components are the glossy tabs and windows and the rounded corners.
The paper theme is one of the best ubuntu themes because it is so popular as it is part of the Paper project. This theme has an attractive custom icon set and cursors for you to choose from.
Install Paper theme using following PPA in Ubuntu and Linux Mint.
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:snwh/pulp $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install paper-gtk-theme # if you want to install the icons and colors $ sudo apt-get install paper-icon-theme $ sudo apt-get install paper-cursor-theme
The Arc theme is arguably the most popular Ubuntu desktop theme. It is a modern flat GTK theme; it has transparent elements and comes in 3 colorways – Arc, Arc-Darker, and Arc-Dark.
Install Arc theme, add the repository, and install manually on Ubuntu 18.04 as shown.

United GNOME is a Gnome shell theme inspired by the Unity desktop themes. It looks identical to Unity, all the while keeping the fantastic functionality of Gnome desktop intact.
This is a magnificent Ubuntu windows Arc-based theme with transparent elements. It is very eye-catching. Matcha is the best dark mode GTK theme with several ARC versions for the control buttons of windows.
Blue Face Theme
If you love Facebook’s interface, then Blue Face is the theme for you. Blue face is a GTK theme that will give your Linux machine an interface very similar to Facebook as the primary color of choice is blue.
Adapta is another great ubuntu-desktop theme. It was made following the guidelines provided by material Design. Even most of the fonts are from the material design resource library.
Install Adapta GTK theme using following PPA in Ubuntu and Linux Mint.
$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:tista/adapta $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install adapta-gtk-theme
On Fedora based distributions.
$ sudo dnf install adapta-gtk-theme-gtk2 adapta-gtk-theme-gtk3 gnome-shell-theme-adapta
Pop is an extremely attractive looking Ubuntu theme available for free download inspired by Adapta. By default, it comes with an orange and brown color scheme, which brings Unity’s interface to mind.
Vimix is a beautifully crafted material design theme that takes inspiration from nana-4. Vimix’s icon set looks very cool. This theme comes in 3 colors Grey, Doder, and Ruby.
Qogir has been called the more relaxed version of Blue Face, and it couldn’t be more accurate. It is a flat Arc-based theme with blue and white as the majority colors present and a dark look for the shell. This is an excellent theme for Ubuntu desktop, which is going to improve the experience for sure.
The material theme was known initially as Fla-Plat. It is an attractive material design theme with inbuilt compatibility for the Oomox theme designer.
It also comes with a very cool Ripple effect animations support. This theme has three color variations and two size variations.
Aqua Shell Theme
This theme is definitely for the DC Aquaman’s fanboys as it comes with a primary color with a blue hue, which is quite different from Blue Face.
MacOS High Sierra Theme
High Sierra is one of the best shell themes for an immense macOS experience on Ubuntu machines. The dark variant is also present in the form of macOS High Sierra DARK.
Minimal Conception Theme
As the name suggests, this is a very minimal and straightforward theme whose main aim is to move away all the clutter displayed on your Ubuntu desktop. It is a trendy minimal theme for Ubuntu desktops.
Windows 10 Light Theme
Do you miss the windows experience? Windows 10 Light theme promises to bridge that gap. With this theme on your UNity or GNOME desktop, it will feel like you never left.
The name sounds like it came straight out of a sci-fi movie, right? It is a dark shell theme that gives you Ubuntu desktop a ninja-like personality.
This theme’s primary aim is to gift users with a more dependable dark GTK theme than the default spacious desktop. Axiom is also based on the Arc-dark theme.
NumixPack is a flat material design inspired theme that comes with its colorways and icon sets.
Copernico is yet another flat design theme. What’s unique about Copernico is that you have the permission to edit and compile individual SCSS files to personalize it further.
T4G-Shell-Theme III is best described as a transparent dark theme version of the T4G shell theme. You will enjoy this theme if you’re a fan of Window’s translucent UI.
As you might have already guessed Glassfull theme is a transparent theme with sharp borders that comes with a blue tint similar to the T4G-Shell-theme. This theme comes with a transparent background.
Granite is a spotless and straightforward Gnome theme that was inspired by GTK’s excellent color palette and dark theme.
Human Shell Theme Collection
Human Shell Theme has a grey semi-transparent color palette, and the layout stays true to the typical Gnome look.
It comes in 3 colorways – default, mobile, black, and next. This theme looks great with macOS-like icons and macOS- like docks.
The simple modified dark theme version of Gnome 3.16’s standard theme is known as Darqlassic. You can edit the SCSS file in the following way – gnome-shell/gnome-shell-sass/_color.scss by running sass –sourcemap=none –update in the gnome-shell folder. It will not refresh if you don’t hit Ctrl + F2 every time you update it.
Vertex is a dope looking three colorway theme that gives a modern touch to the authentic typical Gnome look. The three colorways are – dark header-bars, dark variant, and light variant.
Petitlepton is a tremendous looking Ubuntu desktop theme designed with the principles of Adwaita and Material Design. This theme is immaculate and minimal.
