Within your current chat stream, Twitch now offers the ability to send private chat messages (Whisper on Twitch). This feature is called Whisper. Only you and the user you are whispering to will be able to see it and your whisper will appear in line with the rest of the chat.

A way of sending them a direct message so that only you and the recipient can see the message is Whispering someone on Twitch. This can be useful for talking about things that are related to a different channel, or for sharing clips and helpful links, are unrelated to the stream.

For getting in contact with people who aren’t currently on the same channel as you, or even those who are offline, this feature can even come in handy. Some people may refer to whispering as PMing (Personal Messaging) or DMing (Direct Messaging) and these terms can be used interchangeably with whispering.

How to Whisper on Twitch via Browser

Whispering to someone on mobile is a bit different from Whispering to someone from the browser. Here’s how you can reach out—discreetly, of course.

Type /w @Username

Simply typing /w @username is the easiest way to whisper a user on Twitch. A private chat window between you and the other user will be opened by this method. Bear in mind that you will receive an error message if spell their username incorrectly.

Typing the @ symbol will autocomplete the names of anyone you’ve spoken to if you have previously whispered someone on Twitch. You can choose to manually type out the rest of the names yourself or you can just click their name to whisper them.

  • Use Their Username

Clicking their username is an easy method for whispering a user in the same chat. An information panel that gives you the option to add the user as a friend, whisper to them, or even gift them a subscription will be opened up by this. Just select Whisper, if you want to whisper the user.

This method opens up a private chat window between you and the other user, like typing /w.

  • Use the Whisper Button

You can also select the Whisper button on your menu. Just to the left of the “Get Bits” button, at the top-right corner of your screen, is an icon that looks like a chat window. Highlight it with your cursor. Then it will show Whispers. Press this button.

A list of people you have whispered to in the past will be brought up. Just type their username, if you want to whisper to someone new. Just type what you can remember and you can scroll through a list of users with a matching name, if you don’t remember the entire name, that’s fine.

How to Message Someone on Twitch on Your Phone

You will need to complete the following, to whisper someone on Twitch through your mobile device:

  • Option 1: Through Clicking Their Name

Whispering someone on Twitch mobile works similarly to for a desktop. You can select their name which will bring up several options if you wish to whisper to someone who is currently in the same channel as you. Then select whisper. It will bring up a chat box between the two of you with any message history if there is any. Into the box down the bottom, you can enter your message and hit send when finished.

  • Option 2: Whisper Social Icon

An alternate way to whisper on mobile is to select the whisper/social icon just left of the search button, on the top right of your screen. There will be a button to switch to the whispers tab and this will bring up your twitch friends. Selecting that will reveal all of your previous whispers to other people. There will also be a “Start a whisper” button you can select. Either select start a whisper and type the username in of the person you wish to message or scroll to the person who you want to whisper if you’ve had an exchange with them before.

Can You Whisper a Streamer on Twitch?

On Twitch, you can whisper some streamers. Many, due to so many viewers messaging them, however, will turn off the feature. Just ensure to respect every boundary that they have set up for themselves.

Follow Social Etiquettes

Twitch is also about the community. That’s why even though Whisper is a private messaging system, you should always play by the rules of polite conversation. It’s a great way to build friendships on the platform, along with Twitch Emotes.
