What is Netflix?
You might be surprised by just how easy the service is for consumers if you have completely ignored friends who talk about binge-watching House of Cards or Orange Is the New Black or you are one of the few people who strictly watch television via your cable box and aren’t familiar with Netflix. Being a video-rental company, Netflix offers both streaming on-demand services as well as physical DVDs—Yes, you can still use this service to rent DVDs.
Who owns Netflix?
Co-founder Reed Hastings, former chief product officer Neil Hunt and current chief content officer Ted Sarandos are the three largest individual shareholders.
Who founded Netflix and when?
In 1997, Netflix was founded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in Scotts Valley, California. Sending out discs to customers by mail for a monthly subscription fee, the company started life as a DVD and Blu Ray rental service. To focus on streaming TV and movies online, Netflix eventually dropped disc rentals. Over the past decade, making an estimated $2billion a year, it has become the world’s biggest subscription-based streaming service.
How does Netflix make money?
Subscriptions which cost between $7.99 and $13.99 per month is Netflix’s main source of revenue. According to the company’s earnings report [No Longer Available], this totals about $950 million per month. Through DVD rentals, it also earns about $30 million per month. Approximately $43 million per month is the profit or net income.
Overall, the company earned $8.83 billion in total revenue in 2016 and is on track to make over $11 billion in total revenue in 2017. Through advertisements or commercials in its streaming service, Netflix does not make any money.

How much data does Netflix use?
Netflix users cause problems with ISP’s as it uses so much data. Throttling Netflix and YouTube are even openly admitted by Verizon. How much does Netflix use even if you likely already know that Netflix uses a lot of data? We have some numbers for you!
Curiously, even if it does say that 4K streaming consumes about 7GB per hour, Netflix doesn’t have data estimates for its 4K content with HDR. However, for 4K HDR content, Netflix does recommend a 25mbps connection. We don’t think it takes that much extra data for HDR versus non-HDR content when you hit the 4K barrier, as that isn’t any different than Netflix’s recommendations for normal UHD.
How to limit Netflix data usage
Of course, those who are using a strict data plan cannot afford to be shelling out 7GB per hour of 4K Ultra HD video. If we’re viewing on mobile, we don’t need to. That’s why Netflix lets you limit how much data they use by building some neat features into its Android and iOS applications. You have the choice of four basic options, but you won’t be able to set a specific data limit: Automatic, Maximum Data, Save Data, and Wi-Fi Only.
They’re all pretty self-explanatory, but here’s an overview just in case:
- Automatic: To squeeze about four hours’ worth of video per GB, this mode balances frugal data usage with good video quality (results may vary).
- Maximum Data: This will stream at the highest possible quality for the content you’re viewing, which in most cases is 4K Ultra HD and also your device.
- Save Data: By delivering around six hours of video per GB, as the name implies, this mode reduces quality to scale data usage to the absolute bare minimum.
- Wi-Fi Only: You will only be allowed to stream while connected to Wi-Fi here. Even when Wi-Fi is disabled, downloaded content can still be consumed.
